Caroline Wozniacki crashed out at the quarter-final stage of the French Open after a three-set defeat to Latvian teenager Jelena Ostapenko.
The Dane took the first set on a rain-hit day at Roland Garros, but struggled with the constant delays as Ostapenko went on to win 4-6 6-2 6-2.
It will come as a real blow to former world No 1 Wozniacki, who was chasing a first Grand Slam title and started strongly in a game that was scheduled to start at 1pm local time but didn’t finish until close to 8pm due to a postponed start and regular rain breaks.
Ostapenko, 19, recovered from 2-1 down in the final set to eventually breeze past her opponent, serving out to love to seal her passage to the last four.
She will play Timea Bacsinszky in the last four, the Swiss who ended the final French hope in the singles with a 6-4 6-4 win over Kristina Mladenovic on Philippe Chatrier.
